Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Small Dog Rescue (SDR).

What type of contribution would you like to make?

If you're like us at Small Dog Rescue, you wish you could open your home to each and every dog who needs an attentive, loving family. While this is not practical, giving of your time may be possible. Volunteering helps ensure that more dogs find the happy and safe homes that they so deserve.

Whether you can spare an hour per month, a couple of days per week, or anything in between, every volunteer role is important to Small Dog Rescue.

Volunteer opportunities

Whatever your time constraints, interests, and/or skills may be, there is a way for you to help Minnesota's small dogs. Below is a list of current opportunities, along with brief descriptions. Please follow up with us on any and every role that interests you. We look forward to working with you!

  1. Foster a dog in need
Fostering entails temporarily opening your home to a small dog while a permanent place for him or her is sought. After an application and review process, you will be asked to provide a nurturing, loving place for your guest to live. Stay lengths will vary, though you can choose how long or short the stay will be. Providing a safe place for a homeless dog is one of the most direct ways you can affect the lives of these loving animals. If you cannot provide shelter, you can still take part in the fostering process by visiting homes of potential foster parents and processing their applications (i.e. calling references and veterinarians).
  2. Provide transportation
Do you enjoy the freedom of the open road? SDR has frequent need for drivers to transport dogs to and from appointments and adoption events, as well as picking up/dropping off supplies. Longer transports (over 50 miles) are often needed as well to bring dogs to warm and safe foster homes. Note: The mileage is tax deductable.
  3. Assist with fundraising
You can help SDR raise needed funds to keep helping dogs by volunteering in a fundraiser capacity. From writing and mailing letters to finding willing donors, there are many ways you can enable us to keep helping dogs.
  4. Assist at events
Provide a helping hand and voice at a variety of SDR-sponsored events, including adoption days. Assistance may include giving out information, setting up, cleaning up and providing smiling welcomes to attendees. Mingle with furry and non-furry friends as you help place homeless dogs into stable, nurturing environments.
